SAN MIGUEL: A LITTLE ON ITS HISTORY
According to historical data collected by Jorge Larde Larin, the Spaniards from the Captainship of Guatemala issued the order to found three Spanish colonies on Salvadoran territory. These three colonies were: Santiago of the Horseman's, Villa of San Salvador (in the Valley of the Bermuda ) and Villa of San Miguel of the Border (in the Eastern zone of the present Salvadoran territory).
This third colony, Villa of San Miguel of the Border, included all the territory between the Lempa River and the Gulf of Fonseca . Villa of San Miguel of the Border was founded like a reaction before the intentions of Pedrarias Davila to annex this territory under his administrative and political jurisdiction. Is for that reason, which Don Pedro de Alvarado decides to send to the Captain Luis de Moscoso, with its military troops to found a colony of Spaniards on this territory.
After putting under the Spanish dominion the indigenous towns of those earths, the Captain of Moscoso founds the Spanish colony: San Miguel of the Border; which was named San Miguel for being founded the day of San Miguel Arcángel and border as a form to make clear that until this territory the dominion arrived from Pedro de Alvarado. Nevertheless, the Lencas towns that inhabited the center of Honduras and the east of El Salvador revealed against the Spaniards generating instability and great battles in the new villa. The Spanish manage to put under these indigenous towns again, after giving to death to the cacique Lenca.
Around the year the 1682 San Miguel City was invaded by English pirates who entered by the Gulf of Fonseca and the Bay of Jiquilisco, sacking and setting afire the towns located in the islands and the coast of the present Salvadoran territory. These English pirates were repelled by the Spanish troops; in his fled the invaders leave left an image of the Virgin of Our Mrs. of La Paz , which was taken in procession until the city and was recognized like the gods of that colony.
As complete data, in the year of 1865 the Executive authority decree that in the great department of San Miguel was divided in three: The San Miguel, Unión and Usulután.
